Everyone was excited that day, especially Jeni, my best friend since childhood who lives down the road three blocks from my home. My father called me up and handed me a photograph saying – “This is Tariq, professor of Oriental History at Michigan University. We like him and have no objection to accepting him as your groom. What do you think?
I saw the photo – a friendly and handsome young man smiling at the world while caressing a Persian kitten. I felt an immediate connection and did not take more than a few seconds to say – “Yes,” I mean, I liked them both. Everyone present out there, including Jeni’s parents, laughed their hearts out. Tariq was Jeni’s first cousin!
Connection with the photograph got even more vital when Jeni asked me, giggling – “Didn’t you recognize?” I mulled, trying hard and harder to remember Tariq – where did I see him? Finally, when they left for the day, Jeni handed me over a piece of paper, winked at me, and said – “this might help!”
In my room, I opened the paper that read, “BELLS ARE STILL RINGING!” It was a beautifully handwritten piece ringing inside my head for hours. At last, at the stroke of midnight, when the old Grand Father Clock jingled the sweet drums, I suddenly remembered – “yes, yes”- I said to myself and excited I was, breathing heavily, I could recollect the whole story –
I had to submit my final year’s project paper to my college that day, and as usual, I was late. I almost ran down the parking lot towards the elevator. With the whole set of files full of papers, it was an awkward moment for me when I managed to jump inside with some other people, just at the nick of a moment, when the elevator’s doors closed and I was in! I was wearing my black tee and jeans and my favorite NUQI Hijab with tiny weightless bells about its edge wrapped around my head and neck. “Ah,” – I heard a whispering voice behind me. Instantaneously I turned around and saw him, Tariq, one hand on his forehead and grinning at me; he said – “The bells.” “Very sorry,” – I said. “Don’t worry, it’s alright” – a deep comforting baritone of the man instantly made the situation relaxed. On my floor, I stepped out, looked back, and waved at him. He waved back with a smile.
He was Tariq. But “The Bell is Still Ringing”? How did he find me? I understood later from Jeni that he had been to our college that day to meet his dear sister, stayed back for the night at their home, and had discovered my photo on Jeni’s desk!
How uncanny! A photo then and a photo now and my all-time favorite NUQI Hijab in between – made my life!
