Yellow – Heavy Chiffon Hijab by NUQI

I do not know how and when I developed this idea of wearing a hijab. Maybe it was by seeing my mom and the other ladies in our family. I was the youngest in the house. I got so angry when everyone in the family seemed amused at my desire to wear a hijab. My mom used to laugh out loud, saying, ‘you are too adorable, baby.’

My father never bothered about anything in the household. He is a software engineer, drove to work and back home, enjoyed friends at the baseball league, and loved my mom by heart. He was the family’s cheerleader and never missed out on anyone’s sadness. He could read faces very well. One day, he said, ‘hello missy, I know from your mom that you would like to adorn a hijab, and she said – not now, right?’ He saw my tearing eyes and asked – ‘but let me know why you want to wear a hijab. Do you know the reasons why women wear hijabs? Is it for fashion or something else?’ I looked into his eyes and murmured, ‘no, Baba, this cannot be fashion. Fashion, sometimes, can be revealing. But the hijab always asks us to cover. It makes you feel deep within – with yourself first, then with your surroundings. Hijab is a form of shahadah. Fashion is a trend, but the hijab is a commitment. Fashion changes with time, but hijab stays with you till your grave.’

Baba was moved by what I had said. So I was allowed to adorn my hijab on the first day of the next Ramadan. Everyone in the family believed that I had grown. I could see the spark in their eyes, especially mom’s.

Here I should mention that people often say they were uncomfortable with their hijabs at the beginning. But my experience is quite the opposite. Maybe it was due to the NUQI hijab I wore from day one!

Fabric Care:
