Like all mothers, I am also very proud, worried, and possessive of my child. This pride, worry, and possessiveness grow inside you daily, especially when you are the only child, irrespective of gender. Mine is a little girl who seems to be suddenly all grown up. She has a say of her own in every aspect of the surroundings. She is Noori, short for Noorjahan; her Papa calls her by that name, as do I.

“She was soft, sweet, and obedient even a few days back; what happened to her now?” – I often asked my husband, who seemed to be entirely unaware of our daughter’s progress.
